Philip J. Rizzuto
is a native Long Islander. He is admitted to practice law in all the Courts of the State of New York as well as the United States District Courts Eastern & Southern Districts. He is a graduate of St. John’s University College of Business Administration and St. John’s University School of Law. He is also a member of the New York State Bar Association, Nassau County Bar Association, New York State Trial Lawyers Association and the Columbian Lawyers Association of Nassau County.
Mr. Rizzuto oversees each case assigned to the office, from inception through trial. He remains an active trial attorney while also serving as the firm’s chief administrator. He has successfully represented major insurance carriers, self-insured institutions and governmental municipalities in the defense of liability claims, product liability claims, construction accidents, subrogation, labor law and indemnity issues through all phases of litigation.
Several high profile cases handled by Mr. Rizzuto have generated national media attention. Mr. Rizzuto has appeared on the Fox News Channel and various local television networks to discuss the effects of bullying in our city schools. He has been interviewed by The New York Times, Newsday and the New York Daily News.
Community Service is a value Mr. Rizzuto places in very high regard. He devotes a great deal of time and services to various organizations and individuals. He is especially active with various organizations that assist children. Mr. Rizzuto helped found and sits on the board of directors of Parents Against Bullies, an organization dedicated to helping children and families who have suffered as the result of bully abuse. He is also member of the board of directors and counsel to the Little League of the Three Villages. In addition to his board positions, Mr. Rizzuto coaches several sports teams.
Stanley R. Waxman
has been one of the leading defense trial attorneys in the metropolitan area for more than thirty-five years. He is a graduate of New York University and New York Law School. He earned his Masters of Law at Brooklyn Law School, and is a recipient of the American Juris Prudence award for excellence. Mr. Waxman has served as an Associate Professor of Law at Hofstra University.
Mr. Waxman's professional experience includes extensive trial work as senior Supreme Court trial counsel to Aetna Casualty & Surety Company for more than fifteen years. He is an active lecturer to both the bench and bar. He has lectured before the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and the Bar Associations in Queens and Nassau counties on jury selection and other effective trial tactics. He has authored many articles for professional publications and has edited a liability and insurance practice guide for Matthew Bender Law Publishing Company and co-authored the Personal Injury Desk Book.
Mr. Waxman was lead counsel in Russo v. Rockford, the case that became the authority for defining duties of primary and excess carriers and their respective rights. His experience related to complex coverage issues benefits both carrier and client when multiple sources for indemnification exist, lessening our clients’ exposure to damages.
Mr. Waxman has been Honorary and Special Counsel to the New York City Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and is a director of Link Counseling Center, Inc., a non-profit corporation organized to assist adolescents with alcohol and drug abuse problems. He is also a director of the Grove School, known for their treatment of learning disabled children.
Hon. Joseph J. Kunzeman, J.S.C. (Ret.)
serves as General Counsel and head of our Appellate Practice Unit. Judge Kunzeman served for twenty-two years on the Supreme Court of the State of New York, fifteen years as a Trial Judge and seven years as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department; the largest and busiest Appellate Court in the State of New York.
During his term as a Supreme Court Justice, Judge Kunzeman served on the Executive Board of the New York State Supreme Court Justices Association and was a founder and President of the New York City Association of Supreme Court Justices. He presently serves on the Executive Board of the New York City Association of Supreme Court Justices. He also served as a member of the Governor’s Judicial Screening Panel for the Second Judicial Department.
In addition to his judicial background, Judge Kunzeman brings many years of legislative experience to our firm. He was a member of the New York State Assembly for five terms and while serving in that body was Chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on Consumer Protection. He also served as member of the Insurance Committee of the Assembly and was the ranking member on the Assembly Ways and Means Committee.
In keeping with his commitment to serve the legal community and those entering the practice of law, Judge Kunzeman served as an Adjunct Professor of at St. John's University and the School of Law for twelve years. Since leaving the judiciary, Judge Kunzeman has acted as Special Counsel for the New York State Senate Rules Committee.
Judge Kunzeman's other professional affiliations include membership in the New York State, Queens County and Nassau County Bar Associations. He served Chairman of the Queens County Jury Board, and is currently a member of the board of directors of St. John's University School of Law Alumni Association and has served as a member of the advisory board of St. John's University School of Business Administration. He served on the Temporary State Commission on the Modernization and Revision of Appellate Justice. He is also an arbitrator/mediator for NAM.
Kenneth R. Shapiro
is a graduate of Pace University School of Law and has been with the firm for over seventeen years. He is admitted to practice in the States of New York and New Jersey as well as United States District Courts Eastern & Southern Districts and the United States Tax Court. He is also admitted as a member of Omnicron, Delta Epsilon an Honor Society in Economics. Mr. Shapiro has more than twenty years experience prosecuting plaintiff personal injury actions and has produced several multi million dollar settlements and verdicts.
has been with the firm for over twelve years. She is admitted to practice law in all the courts of the State of New York. She began her career as a secretary, then as a law clerk during law school. After her graduation from Hofstra School of Law and admission to the bar, she began her legal career as an associate with our firm. She assists Judge Kunzeman in the Appellate Practice Unit. Ms. Reed is an Adjunct Professor at Nassau Community College and Associate Counsel to the New York State Fraternal Order of Police. She is a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association and Nassau County Bar Association.
Alicia M. Bartkowski
is a graduate of Hofstra University School of Law. She is admitted to practice law in New York State. While attending Hofstra Unversity, her note “The World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Free Trade and the American Example,” was published in the Journal of International Business and Law, Volume 2, No. 1. She also served as Notes and Comments Editor of the Journal of International Business and Law for 2003-2004. She is a member of the American Bar Association and the Nassau County Bar Association.
Thomas P. Murphy
is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a graduate of St. John’s University and New York Law School. He is admitted to practice law in New York State and the United States District Court, Eastern District. Before turning to civil litigation, Mr. Murphy worked in banking and securities law as assistant counsel for Schroeder’s, Inc. and later at Chase and the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell. Over the past seven years he has successfully defended many clients in various types of suits including personal injury, professional malpractice, products liability, defamation and admiralty. More recently, Mr. Murphy has successfully defended many automobile cases using biomechanical engineers. He is a member of the Appellate Practice Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association and serves on the Lawyer’s Assistance Committees of the Nassau County and New York State Bar Associations. Jason R. Corrado, Sr.
is a graduate of Boston University and Hofstra University School of Law, and the recipient of the Zeldes, Needle & Cooper Award for Excellence in Oral Advocacy. He is admitted to all courts of the State of New York, in addition to the Federal District Courts of the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts. Mr. Corrado is the firm’s senior medical malpractice attorney, with extensive experience litigating malpractice cases against physicians, hospitals, nurses, physician’s assistants and other medical providers.
